The last stage covers two things at once. Vowel teams are pairs of letters that make one long-vowel or diphthong sound — ai (rain), ee (tree), oa (boat), oi (coin) — following the loose but useful rule "when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking." Alongside them, tricky words (also called heart words or sight words) are common words that break the phonics rules in at least one spot — said, was, the — and have to be partly memorized rather than fully sounded out.
Why this stage matters
This is the widest, highest-traffic stage on this site because it's also the longest to teach — English has far more vowel spellings than consonant ones. It's also where reading starts to look like real reading: most everyday children's books are readable once vowel teams and the ~100 most common tricky words are secure.
How long it usually takes
3–6 months, taught in small groups (one or two vowel teams at a time) with continuous review — by far the longest stage.
The most common struggle
Mixing up which vowel-team spelling to use when a word could plausibly be several (rain vs rane vs rein) — this is a spelling problem, not a reading one, and normal at this stage. Read more →
