Letters and Sounds opens with exactly these six letters, s, a, t, p, i, n, and Jolly Phonics uses the same six in a slightly different order (s, a, t, i, p, n). It isn't alphabetical order — it's chosen because these six combine into more real three-letter words (sat, pin, tap, nip, sip...) than any other six-letter set, so a child can start blending and reading real words within the first week or two instead of drilling isolated sounds for a month.
Why this stage matters
SATPIN is the on-ramp to blending — the skill in Stage 3. A child who knows all six sounds automatically (no hesitation, no thinking) is ready to start sounding out words like "sat" and "pin" the same week. Rushing past SATPIN before it's automatic is the single most common reason blending practice stalls later.
How long it usually takes
1–3 weeks for most children learning at a relaxed pace of one new sound every 1–2 days, faster with daily short (5–10 minute) sessions.
