Vowel teams (also called vowel digraphs) are two vowels that work together to make one sound — like the ea in beach or the oa in boat. They come after digraphs and magic-e in most phonics sequences, and they’re the trickiest part of English spelling because the same pair can say different sounds, and the same sound can be spelled different ways.

This page gives you the full list, sorted by vowel sound, with 20+ example words each and the position rule that determines which spelling to use.

Vowel teams are the core of Stage 5 — see the vowel teams & tricky words stage in the phonics roadmap for the full picture, including tricky words.

Long A vowel teams: ai and ay

Both make the /eɪ/ sound. The golden rule: ai goes in the middle of a word; ay goes at the end.

Think of it as: ay stands at the door, ai sits inside.

ai words (middle)

ay words (end)

💡 Position rule: ai vs ay

Middle of word → ai (rain)  |  End of word → ay (play)

Long E vowel teams: ea, ee, ie, ei, ey

Five different spellings for /i/. Teach ee first (most consistent), then ea (most common but has exceptions), then the others.

ee words

ea = /i/ words

ea = /ɛ/ exception words (teach separately)

Tip:Present the /ɛ/ ea words as a named group — “bread-head-dead” cluster. Kids remember labeled exceptions better than unlabeled surprises.

ie = /i/ words

ei = /i/ words (after c)

The rule: i before e, except after c. Only applies to the /i/ sound — neighbor and weigh use ei but say /eɪ/.

ey = /i/ words (usually unstressed syllable)

Long O vowel teams: oa and ow

Same rule as ai/ay: oa sits in the middle; ow stands at the end when it says /oʊ/. But watch out — ow also says /aʊ/ (as in cow). See the diphthongs post for the /aʊ/ ow words.

oa words

ow = /oʊ/ words

The /u/ vowel teams: oo, ue, ui, ew

oo = /u/ words (long oo)

Hear long oo.

oo = /ʊ/ words (short oo — teach as second oo sound)

Hear short oo.

📚 Two oo sounds chant

Long oo: moon – spoon – zoo
Short oo: book – cook – foot

Drill both rows side by side once the long oo is solid.

How to teach vowel teams: the 4-step sequence

  1. One team per lesson.Don’t mix ai and ay in the same sitting. One team, one lesson. Two lessons later, do a comparison sort.
  2. Sort first, read second.Give 10 cards. Sort into “ai words” and “other words.” Sorting activates pattern recognition faster than reading alone.
  3. Teach the position rule explicitly. Children who learn the rule make 60% fewer spelling errors than those who just memorize lists.
  4. Dictation with 5 words per session. Say the word; child writes it. Correct spelling encodes the visual pattern.

Suggested teaching order

WeekVowel teamSound
1–2ee/i/
3–4ea/i/ (defer /ɛ/ exception)
5–6ai / ay/eɪ/ (position rule)
7–8oa / ow/oʊ/ (position rule)
9–10oo (long)/u/
11–12oo (short), ue, ui/ʊ/ then /u/
13–14ie, ei, ey/i/ (rare spellings)
15ea = /ɛ/ exceptionbread, head cluster

Common mistakes and how to fix them

  • rain → rane / rayn. Kids who know magic-e try a-e first. Show how ai produces the same /eɪ/ sound without a silent e at the end.
  • meat → meet.Both are real words. Teach meaning alongside spelling from day one. “You eat meat; your feet meetthe floor.”
  • oo confusion — reading book as /u/. Use the two-oo chant until the short-oo words become automatic by visual memory.
  • receive → recieve.The i-before-e rule only applies after c for the /i/ sound. Chant: “i before e, except after c.”

Vowel team practice worksheets

Want your child to write each word too, not just read it? These worksheets group every pattern above by long-vowel sound, with a blank line under every word.

Ready for the next level? See diphthongs (oi, oy, ou, ow) and long vowels vs short vowels for the complete vowel picture.

Vowel teams are also one of the skills that mark the shift into first-grade phonics, alongside magic-e and r-controlled vowels. And don’t forget Y as a vowel — it behaves like a vowel team partner in words like play and key.
