Download Free PDF — 2 pages · 8 KB

Tricky words for confident readers — would, should, water, once, friend, any.

What’s inside

  • An instructions page with the four-step routine.
  • One practice page: would, should, water, once, friend, any and more.

Every word in this PDF (15)

Handy for checking the list fits your child before printing, or for making your own games.

would, water, should, once, friend, any, school, many, house, something, mouse, different, because, eye, want

How to use it

  1. Look, say, sound, write, check.
  2. Group could / would / should — the same tricky part in all three.
  3. Use each word in a written sentence.
  4. Keep a personal list of words that still trip your child up.

Watch out for

  • Would, should and could share the tricky "oul" — teach them as a set, not one by one.
  • Once starts with a /w/ sound that isn't written — say it slowly and point to the o.
  • Many and any use a to spell a short e sound; point to the a so it doesn't get read as "man-ee".
