Suffix Spelling Rules Worksheet (Free PDF)
One fill-in-the-blank practice page per rule — just add it, double the consonant, or drop the silent e.
Three rules that cover almost every -ing, -ed and -er spelling change, each with its own practice page.
What’s inside
- An instructions page.
- Rule 1 — Just Add It: jump + ing →, walk + ed →, help + er →.
- Rule 2 — Double the Final Consonant (run + ing →, stop + ed →, hop + er →) and Rule 3 — Drop the Silent E.
How to use it
- Read the base word and the suffix.
- Decide which rule applies — just add, double, or drop the e.
- Write the new word and read it.
- Contrast pairs like hoping / hopping to show why the rule matters.
Watch out for
- Doubling only happens after one short vowel and one consonant: hop → hopping, but jump → jumping.
- Hoping and hopping mean different things — the doubled letter is the only difference.
- Drop the e only before a vowel suffix: make → making, but hope → hopeful.
