Prefixes & Suffixes — Spot the Chunk (Free PDF)
Un-, re-, dis-, -ful, -less and more — practice spotting each meaning-changing chunk, one group per page.
Longer words broken into chunks: spot the prefix or suffix, say what it means, and put the word back together — reading and vocabulary at once.
What’s inside
- An instructions page.
- Prefix pages: un- (not / opposite: un + happy →, un + do →, un + lock →), re- (again: re + play →), dis-, pre-, mis-.
- Suffix pages: -ful, -less, -ness and -ly.
Every word in this PDF (14)
Handy for checking the list fits your child before printing, or for making your own games.
dis, care, color, help, fear, end, good, dark, kind, sad, quick, quiet, slow, soft
How to use it
- Cover the second chunk and read the first; then swap.
- Say what the prefix or suffix means.
- Write the whole word and use it in a sentence.
- One chunk per session.
Watch out for
- Un- and dis- both mean "not", but they don't swap: we say unhappy, not dishappy. Teach the real words, not a rule.
- Adding -ful to a word never doubles the l (careful, not carefull).
- Covering each chunk with a finger is the whole method — skipping it turns the sheet into a guessing exercise.
