Plural Rules Worksheet (Free PDF)
One practice page per rule — just add -s, add -es, or change y to ies.
Three rules that cover almost every English plural, one practice page each.
What’s inside
- An instructions page.
- Rule 1 — Just Add -s (cat + s →, dog + s →, book + s →).
- Rule 2 — Add -es after s, x, z, ch, sh (box + es →, bus + es →, buzz + es →) and Rule 3 — Y to IES.
How to use it
- Read the rule and the base word.
- Add the ending and write the plural.
- Say it aloud: -es adds a whole extra beat (box-es).
- Mix all three rules in a quick oral quiz at the end.
Watch out for
- -es after s, x, z, ch and sh adds a whole extra beat (box-es); -s alone doesn't (cats). Say both aloud to hear it.
- Y to -ies only happens after a consonant (baby → babies); after a vowel, just add -s (boy → boys).
- Irregular plurals (children, mice, feet) follow none of the three rules — keep a separate list.
