Practice in the format of the UK Year 1 Phonics Screening Check: real words and made-up words side by side, sorted from simple CVC up to vowel teams.

What’s inside

  • Simple CVC: real words (cat, sun, hop, dig, wet, fun) next to nonsense words (vap, nem, dit, gof, wux, yab).
  • Consonant digraphs: chip / chiv, shop / shand, thin / thob, shed / shec, chat / chun.
  • Consonant blends (blob / blim, crab / crat, stop / stod, trap / trab, flag / flin) and vowel teams (rain / spaim, tree / treet…).

How to use it

  1. Explain that a dot means a made-up word — there's no meaning to find, just sounds to read.
  2. Your child reads each word aloud; note which ones need help.
  3. If a nonsense word gets read as a real word (blim → "blimp"), point to each letter and re-read.
  4. Do one page per session, not the whole pack at once.

Who it’s for

Ages 5–6 in England (Year 1), and any child who reads words by guessing rather than sounding out.
