How to use it

1. Explain: ph looks new but says /f/; wh usually says /w/.
2. Blend and write each word.
3. Wheel and whale have vowel teams; white has a magic e — save this page for after those are taught.
4. Keep a list of ph and wh words your child finds in books.

Watch out for

• Ph almost always says /f/ — phone, photo, graph — but a child who hasn't met it will read "p-h".
• Wh says /w/ in most words, but in who and whole it says /h/ — those are best taught as tricky words.
• Most ph words are longer or from science topics; this page is for readers beyond the core sounds.
