Twenty-six one-page sheets that combine tracing a letter with a first-sound listening task, so writing the letter and hearing its sound are practiced together.

What’s inside

  • An instructions page, then one page per letter: Aa (apple), Bb (ball), Cc (cat)… Zz (zebra).
  • Each page: say the sound using the keyword, trace the big light-gray letter, write it twice more on practice lines.
  • A word list to circle the words that start with the letter — for b: circle "bed" but not "log" or "fox".

Every word in this PDF (102)

Handy for checking the list fits your child before printing, or for making your own games.

apple, pig, sun, add, axe, dog, ant, ball, log, bed, fox, bus, cat, bat, hen, jam, wig, cow, can, cup, pen, dig, duck, top, doll, egg, end, mud, sit, elf, elk, fish, jug, fan, fig, hop, goat, gum, gas, tap, gap, hat, jet, hug, igloo, itch, mop, ink, ill, ten, cap, jog, kite, kid, mat, king, keg, lion, leg, lip, moon, mug, map, nest, nut, nap, net, octopus, ox, odd, pan, pot, queen, quill, quit, quiz, rabbit, rug, run, tab, rat, sad, sat, tiger, tan, pin, umbrella, under, van, vine, vet, vest, worm, web, wet, wax, six, yak, yes, zebra, zoo, zip

How to use it

  1. Say the keyword together, stretching the first sound: "b-b-ball."
  2. Trace the big letter, then write it twice on the lines.
  3. Read the word choices aloud to your child and let them circle the ones that start with the sound — it's a listening task, not a reading one.
  4. Finish by finding one thing in the room that starts with the same sound.

Who it’s for

Ages 3–5 in Stages 1–2. Follow the site's order (s, a, t, p, i, n first) rather than A to Z if you're teaching the sounds for the first time.
